When my husband first mentioned that he wanted a crochet wrist pouch, I was thrilled! But as he kept talking, the story took a funny, very relatable turn.
He had been on the hunt for a handy everyday pouch to keep his phone, wallet, and essentials organized. While walking around the mall, he actually spotted one that caught his attention. The catch? He was way too shy to pull out his phone and snap a quick photo for reference. As he admitted with a laugh, he was worried people around him might think differently of him because the design was, in his words, “not very manly at all!” 😅😂
To be completely fair to him, I couldn’t blame him one bit. If you look at the majority of crochet patterns out there, a huge portion of the stitches and structures lean toward traditional feminine aesthetics—delicate lace, openwork motifs, or soft ruffles. Finding a crochet accessory that feels sleek, tailored, and masculine can be a real challenge in the crafting community.
That was the exact moment the lightbulb went off for me. I realized I didn’t need to hunt down a store-bought option when I could just make one myself. My goal was simple: create a custom wrist pouch that was stylish, modern, and practical enough for him to carry around every single day without feeling self-conscious.
The Design Process
To bring this vision to life, I focused on clean lines, high-contrast textures, and sturdy hardware to give the bag a clean, polished finish.
- The Linen Stitch: I chose the classic linen stitch for this project, working clean rows of single crochet and chain-1 spaces using a deep black yarn. This stitch is absolute magic for unisex accessories because it creates a dense, flat, tightly woven texture that looks effortlessly modern and clean.

- The Hardware: I paired the black crochet fabric with an exposed silver metal zipper, metal D-rings, and a heavy-duty swivel snap clasp for the wrist strap. The metallic hardware adds a sharp, industrial finish that perfectly complements the matte stitch work.

- Everyday Functionality: It’s crafted to the ideal size to comfortably hold a smartphone, cardholder, and keys without bulging or stretching out of shape.

In the end, what started as a timid moment at the mall turned into a special handmade project. Now he has a one-of-a-kind piece crafted specifically for him that he can carry with total confidence—no sneaking awkward photos required!
What about you? Have you ever used the linen stitch to create a sleek, structured piece, or adapted a pattern for someone special?
