Remember That Yarn I Asked You About?
If you’ve been following my crochet adventures, you might remember the yarn cake I introduced in an earlier post.
I asked my readers a little question:
Should I turn this yarn into a dress or a handmade crochet shawl?
My husband had already made his choice.
“Make a dress.”
Well, okay then! 😂
I decided to give the dress idea a proper chance and started with a gauge.
And that’s when I discovered something very important.
This little cake of yarn was not going to be enough for the dress I had in mind. Buying a couple of this yarn cake won’t be practical either.
Cue the tiny heartbreak. 😅
I had to let go of the dress idea and rethink the project.
So, instead of forcing the yarn to become something it couldn’t, I decided to go straight for the other option.
The shawl it is!
And looking at the finished piece now, I think the yarn made the right decision for me.
From a Dress That Couldn’t Be to a Shawl I Absolutely Love
What started as a small golden triangle slowly became something much bigger.
Row by row, the lace pattern began to reveal itself.
The warm golden shades started blending into peach, coral, pink, and deeper berry tones. The further I went, the more I loved watching the colors unfold.
There was something almost magical about it.
I wasn’t simply making a shawl anymore.
I was watching this beautiful cake of yarn tell me what it wanted to become.
And apparently, it wanted to be a cozy, colorful shawl. 🧶💕
Of Course, There Was Some Frogging. A LOT of Frogging. 😅
Now let’s talk about the part of crochet that nobody puts on the pretty finished-project photo.
The mistakes.
At one point, I realized I had made a mistake several rows back.
And unfortunately, the only solution was to frog a couple of rows.
Then I did it again.
And possibly again.
Let’s just say I became very well acquainted with my unraveling skills during this project. 😂
Lace patterns are especially good at hiding little mistakes until you’re several rows ahead and suddenly something doesn’t quite look right.
After going through that more than once, I developed a new rule for myself:
Check. Every. Row.
Before moving on, I started checking whether I had:
• Missed a stitch
• Added an extra stitch
• Followed the pattern repeat correctly
• Placed the clusters where they belonged
• Accidentally created a tiny crochet mystery somewhere along the way 😂
It took a little more time, but it saved me from having to frog even more rows later.
Future me definitely appreciated that decision.
And Then the Colors Happened 🌸
This is probably one of my favorite things about this shawl.
The colors feel so warm.
The golden beginning gradually flows into beautiful oranges and corals before becoming pinker and deeper toward the other end.
There’s something about the combination that makes the shawl feel cozy even before you wrap it around yourself.
And that’s exactly what I hope someone feels when they eventually wears it.
Warmth.
Not just from the yarn, but from the fact that it was made slowly, stitch by stitch, by hand.
This Shawl Is Now Looking for Its New Home 🧶💕
And this is where the story takes one more little turn.
After spending all those hours making, checking, frogging, counting, and occasionally questioning my crochet decisions 😂, I’ve decided to add this handmade shawl to the Knot and Curls shop.
So this isn’t just another project that gets folded away into my collection.
This one is available for someone to love and wear.
I can already imagine it wrapped around someone’s shoulders on a cool evening, draped over a simple outfit, or brought along when a little extra warmth is needed.
The colors make it especially easy to pair with simple outfits while still giving them a beautiful pop of warmth.
And because this is handmade, there’s something special about knowing that no factory assembly line made it.
It was made one stitch at a time.

What I Love Most About This Handmade Shawl
I originally wanted to make a dress.
My husband wanted me to make a dress.
I even started with that possibility in mind.
But the yarn had other plans.
And now I honestly wouldn’t change it.
I love how the colors flow through the lacework and how the whole piece feels warm and inviting.
It reminds me that sometimes our creative plans don’t work out exactly the way we imagined.
And that’s okay.
Sometimes the unexpected version becomes the one we love even more.

💕 A Little Note From Knot and Curls
There is something wonderfully imperfect about handmade things.
There are stitches that took longer than expected.
Rows that had to be unraveled.
Moments of “Wait… something isn’t right.”
And then there’s that beautiful moment when you finally step back and realize:
I made this.
This shawl carries all of those moments in it.
And now that it’s finished, I’m ready to pass that warmth on to someone else.
I hope whoever takes it home feels a little bit of the joy I felt while making it.
