The Morning Glory: My Flower of the Month
There is something about the morning glory flower that feels a little magical.
Maybe it is because it greets the day by opening its blooms in the morning, almost as if it is saying, Good morning, world. I am ready.

And then, just like that, its beauty reminds us that not everything is meant to last forever.
For this month’s flower, I decided to turn the morning glory into crochet. Of course, I couldn’t just make one little flower and call it a day. I ended up with this soft, purple crocheted version with creamy accents, and I have to say, I really love how it turned out.
There is something particularly fun about recreating a flower with yarn. A real flower has its own natural shape and texture, while crochet gives me the chance to interpret those little details stitch by stitch.
And that got me thinking about what the morning glory actually represents.
What Does the Morning Glory Symbolize?
The morning glory is commonly associated with affection, love, renewal, and the fleeting nature of life. Its symbolism can vary depending on the culture and flower language being referenced.
One of the things I find most interesting is its connection to transience. Morning glory blooms are beautiful, but many varieties open for only a relatively short time. They are a lovely little reminder that some beautiful things are temporary.
And honestly, I think that is a pretty good message for a flower.
We often want beautiful moments to last forever. We want to hold onto them, photograph them, preserve them, and somehow keep them exactly as they were.
But maybe part of their beauty is that they don’t.
The morning glory seems to say: Enjoy this while it is here.
That is a message I can get behind.
A Flower That Starts the Day
The name itself gives away one of the morning glory’s most recognizable characteristics.
Many morning glory flowers open in the morning and gradually close later in the day. There are different species and growing conditions, so their exact blooming habits can vary, but that morning-opening quality is one of the reasons the flower has become so strongly associated with the beginning of the day.
I like that idea because mornings are often about starting over.
A new day.
A fresh cup of coffee.
A new project.
A new idea that suddenly pops into your head when you are supposed to be doing something else.
If you crochet, you know exactly what I mean.
The morning glory feels like a tiny reminder that every day gives us another chance to begin.
Crochet Flowers Have Their Own Kind of Permanence
There is also something interesting about making a flower out of yarn.
A real morning glory reminds us that flowers bloom and fade. A crochet morning glory does not have quite the same problem.
This one can stay with you.
It can become part of a bouquet, a decoration, a hair accessory, a bag embellishment, or simply a little handmade flower sitting somewhere because you thought it was cute.
And that is one of the reasons I love crochet.
It allows us to take inspiration from something temporary and turn it into something we can keep.
Not exactly the same as the real thing, of course. But that is the fun of it.
A Little Morning Glory Reminder
So, what am I taking away from this month’s flower?
The morning glory reminds me to appreciate things while they are happening.
A morning that feels peaceful.
A project that is coming together.
A flower that makes you stop and look.
A few quiet minutes with a crochet hook.
Not everything has to last forever to be meaningful.
Sometimes, it is enough that it happened.
And if I can turn that little reminder into a crochet flower that I get to keep, well, that’s even better.
So here is my Flower of the Month: the morning glory, recreated one stitch at a time.
And now that I’ve made one, I’m already wondering which flower I should crochet next.
Because apparently, I have decided that I need an entire garden made of yarn.
