The Knots We Carry: A Crochet Poem About Life, Mistakes, and Second Chances

The Knots We Carry

There are knots in every skein of yarn,

little tangles hiding where we least expect them.

Sometimes I pull gently,

hoping they will loosen on their own.

Sometimes I tug too hard,

only to make them tighter.

And sometimes,

I simply have to stop.

Look closely.

Find where the yarn crossed itself.

Trace it back to where the tangle began.

Life has its own knots.

The decisions we wish we could undo.

The words we wish we had never said.

The doors we should have walked through,

and the ones we wish we had never opened.

There are moments when we look back

and wonder,

What if I had chosen differently?

What if I had listened?

What if I had turned left instead of right?

One decision can change the shape of a life,

just as one misplaced stitch

can change the shape of a project.

Sometimes we make mistakes

and spend years wondering

how different everything might have been.

But maybe life, like crochet,

is not meant to be perfectly smooth.

Sometimes the yarn tangles.

Sometimes the stitches go wrong.

Sometimes we have to unravel

a few rows and begin again.

And sometimes,

we don’t.

Sometimes we leave the mistake where it is

and keep crocheting around it.

Because perhaps the goal

was never to create something without flaws.

Perhaps it was to create something

that carries our story.

The knot reminds us

that we were there.

That we tried.

That we chose.

That we stumbled.

That we learned.

A knot does not erase

all the beautiful stitches that came before it.

And it does not decide

what comes after.

We can still pick up the yarn.

We can still make the next stitch.

We can still change the pattern.

Maybe our lives took a different turn

because of the choices we made,

but a different path

does not always mean a meaningless one.

Sometimes the road we never planned

leads us somewhere

we never knew we needed to be.

So I am learning

not to hate the knots.

I may still wish

some of them had never happened.

I may still wonder

how things could have been.

Untangling pink yarn as a symbol of unraveling the knots we carry through life

But I am learning to loosen them

with patience.

To forgive the hands

that made the tangled choices.

Even when those hands were mine.

And when I cannot undo the knot,

I will carry it gently.

Not as proof that I failed,

but as a reminder

that I continued.

Because life is not only

about the perfect stitches.

It is also about

the tangled ones.

The skipped stitches.

The wrong turns.

The unraveling.

The starting over.

And somehow,

with enough patience and courage,

we keep going.

One stitch at a time.

If this little reflection about the knots we carry in life resonated with you, I hope you’ll stay awhile and explore more of my creative journey.

There are more crochet stories, lessons, tutorials, and little thoughts waiting for you here on the blog. And if you’d like to bring a little handmade warmth into your own life, take a peek at my shop, where each creation is made one stitch at a time.

Because just like life, handmade things don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Sometimes, it’s the little imperfections, unexpected turns, and tangled moments that make them truly ours.

Thank you for being here, and happy crocheting. ♡
