And funny enough, I discovered my favorite way to make a magic ring completely by accident.
The Day I Found an Easier Way to Make a Magic Ring 😂
It happened while my hubby was trying to make our youngest daughter a little plushie cupcake. 🧁💕
I had taught him how to make a magic ring the traditional way, slowly and step by step. I guided him through each movement, thinking, Okay, you’ve got this!
But somehow, the magic ring just wasn’t clicking for him.
And honestly, I completely understood. The traditional method has several little movements to remember, especially when you’re still getting comfortable with holding the yarn and hook together.
So instead of making him repeat the same steps over and over, I started thinking…
Hmm… what if we try it this way?
That’s when I changed the way I positioned the hook.
And suddenly…
It worked! 😂🧶✨
That little moment made me realize that sometimes it’s not that someone can’t learn a crochet technique. They simply haven’t found the movement that makes sense to them yet.
My hubby is actually very clever. 😂 He just wasn’t having his best day with that tiny little magic ring!
And somehow, his attempt to make a cupcake for our little girl became the reason I discovered a method that I now find much easier.
My Easy Magic Ring Method
So here’s the little trick I discovered.
Once I have my ring ready, I position my crochet hook through the ring with the hook facing downward.
Instead of doing the usual yarn over, I use a yarn under. Pull up a loop then make a chain.
That’s the little difference.
I find that keeping the hook facing down and yarning under makes the movement easier for me to control, especially when I’m working into the center of the ring.
It might seem like such a tiny adjustment, but sometimes a tiny adjustment is all it takes to make something finally click. ✨
If you’re used to yarning over, the yarn-under movement might feel a little unusual at first. Give it a few tries and let your hands get familiar with it.

Why I Like This Method
I love finding little ways to make crochet feel less intimidating, especially for beginners.
A magic ring is often one of those first crochet techniques that can feel confusing. There are loops, yarn, hooks, fingers going in different directions… and suddenly you’re wondering how something so small became so complicated. 😂
But crochet doesn’t always have to be about following one exact method.
Sometimes you just need to find a different way of holding your hook, moving your yarn, or creating your stitches.
This method may not replace the traditional way for everyone, and that’s perfectly okay. If the traditional magic ring works beautifully for you, keep doing what works!
But if you’ve been struggling with it, maybe this little variation will make things easier.
