When Daddy Tries to Crochet: A Story of Two Amigurumi Toys 💕

If you’ve been following my craft journey for a while, you know how much joy creating handmade plushies brings to our home. Every piece usually comes with a little story, but this pair of crocheted cuties easily takes the crown for the funniest memory yet!

The Axolotl & The Cupcake Request

Recently, I finished up a super sweet crochet axolotl (complete with tiny blue gills and cute little paws!) for the kids.

Seeing how much love the new plushie was getting, my bunso (youngest) decided she needed a special plushie of her own: a giant ice cream cupcake with sprinkles. 🧁✨

Instead of coming to me, though, she went straight to her dad with her special request!

Daddy’s Crochet Attempt 😆

Naturally, Daddy didn’t want to let her down. He actually sat down, grabbed yarn and a hook, and gave it a shot!

I honestly could not hold back my laughter watching him try to decipher yarn tension and stitch counts. Bless his heart, I had tears in my eyes watching him struggle so hard, but you have to give him major props for trying! Watching a big guy try to work with tiny yarn for his kid is peak dad energy.

Saved by Mom!

After seeing that Daddy’s crochet attempt was heading toward a complete yarn disaster, Mom had to step in and save the day. I took over the hook, pulled together some bright pink icing, stitched on little sprinkles, and finished up the scoop over a cozy brown cone base.

In the end, bunso got her dream cupcake plushie, Daddy got to keep his sanity, and I got a great laugh and two super cute handmade plushies for my kids!

What about you guys? Has your partner ever tried picking up your crafts to impress the kids?
