What Do You Think of Joy So Far? 💛
Okay, she is finally starting to look like Joy! 😂💛
If you’ve been following along with my crochet journey, you might remember that I started making Joy from Inside Out because the movie has become such a special one for our family. If you haven’t seen the beginning of this little crochet adventure yet, you can catch up here:

From Tiny Pieces to an Actual Body 😂
When I first started this project, I had a few little yellow crocheted pieces that didn’t look much like Joy at all.
There were the legs.
Then the body.
Then the head.
And, of course, a whole lot of yellow yarn. 😂
At that point, I really had to trust the process because looking at each piece on its own made it pretty difficult to imagine the finished character.
But that’s one of the things I love about amigurumi.
You start with yarn, a crochet hook, and a pattern.
Then, little by little, the shape begins to appear.
I joined the legs, worked on the body, added the light green section, and eventually got to the head.
And suddenly I had that little moment of,
Wait… is that Joy? 😂
Hmm… 🤔
I’m honestly not sure by looking on this part of my progress here! 🤣
But hey, we’re getting there!
(Giving myself a pat on the shoulder 😌)
Now that we’ve got most of her body together, I can finally move on to one of my favorite parts of making amigurumi…
Her face!
From a Ball of Yarn to Joy’s Face
This is the stage where things suddenly start to feel real.
After all those rounds of yellow yarn, counting stitches, stuffing, attaching pieces, and checking my handwritten notes, I finally got to embroider Joy’s facial features.
And look at her! 🥹💛
She doesn’t have her hair, arms and her dress is not even done yet, but I couldn’t resist taking a photo because she is finally starting to have some personality.
I embroidered her eyebrows, nose, and those beautiful blue eyes. And honestly, watching her expression appear stitch by stitch was such a satisfying moment.
Of course, getting an amigurumi face right is another adventure altogether. 😂
Move one stitch slightly and suddenly your cute little character looks like she’s silently judging all your crochet decisions.
The Pattern I’m Following
For this Joy amigurumi, I’m still following the pattern I found on YouTube from Nudo y Tejido.
And I have to give YouTube and the creator a little appreciation here because the subtitles have been such a lifesaver!
Even better, the creator has written the pattern instructions for each round in English right on the screen. Otherwise, honestly, I would go bananas. 😂
Why I Chose to Embroider Her Eyes
I decided not to use safety eyes for Joy.
Instead, I’m embroidering her blue eyes.
I’ve been thinking more about making my amigurumi dolls suitable for little ones, especially because I know many of us crochet things for our own children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or simply have little hands around the house.
For that reason, I prefer to avoid small hardware whenever I can and embroider the facial features instead.
It takes a little more time and patience, but I really like the soft handmade look it gives the doll.
And now that I can actually see those blue eyes on her face, I’m pretty happy with my decision. 💙
She Still Needs Her Hair!
Of course, we’re not finished yet!
Joy still needs her hair, and I’m already excited to see how much her personality changes once all those blue strands are attached.
Right now, she is somewhere between Joy from Inside Out and a very cheerful yellow crochet potato. 😂
But I can finally see where we’re going with this!
That’s probably one of my favorite things about making amigurumi. You start with a pile of yarn and somehow, stitch by stitch, a character begins to appear.
It’s like watching a little personality grow right in front of you.
